A strategic location for the city, the Varangéville footbridge was several times the scene of the scars of war. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, it was enhanced in 1959 by the SNCF during the electrification of the lines. Often bombed or booby-trapped, it is the symbol of the link between the upper town and the lower town. In 1971, the municipality made it cross rue Gabriel Péri. Its extension is shifted to be opposite the schoolchildren's lane.
Note that Varangéville is one of the rare cities in the world to have a pedestrian bridge which allows you to cross a railway line, a river axis and a main road in the middle of the city. The total range is 100 meters. It is placed on 3 piles and the distance is 60 meters between the 2 furthest piles. This footbridge is used every day by several hundred people, workers, schoolchildren or simple passers-by.
